Insurance
The goods you have in a Self Storage space are yours and remain your sole responsibility. You should always have them covered by insurance. Your goods are not insured by the Self Storage centre. Check with your insurance providers to see if your cover has provisions for items in storage – you may already be covered. If not, your Self Storage consultant should be able to assist you with the provision of insurance cover.
Item Information
APPLIANCES
Fridges, freezers and other white goods should be clean and dry before storing, with a deodoriser inside for freshness and the door left slightly ajar. Stoves and other cooking equipment should be cleaned thoroughly before storing. Avoid placing other items inside white goods. Some goods can be stacked on top of fridges, freezers and stoves. Tools and other equipment should always be cleaned before storing.
FURNITURE
Cover mattresses and lounges with plastic covers. Empty wardrobes, drawers and cupboards to protect shelving and framework. Disassemble beds and tables (where possible), and wrap legs. Store tables and other fragile items on padding upside down on top of other solid sturdy items to protect their legs and structure. Vacuum upholstery clean before storing. Lightweight chairs can be stacked seat to seat, or on top of upturned tables. Use plastic covers to cover your furniture. Book should be packed flat, not on their spines, in small cartons so they're easily handled.
Using packing accessories like cartons, porta robes, paper, tape, bubble wrap, plastic c covers and sheeting will protect your goods while they're in storage. A range of these items is usually available at your Self Storages centre's office.
DISHES & GLASSWARE
Use a layer of packing at the top and bottom of cartons. Individually wrap items in packing paper. Nest plates and cups and stand plates, saucers, platters and casseroles on their edges. Fill all gaps in the carton with scrunched paper or other material to prevent movement. Clearly label all cartons containing breakables and don't store any heavy items on top of them.
MIRRORS, WINDOWS, SCREENS AND PAINTINGS
Protect these items with packing material like bubble wrap and store them on their edges.
Fill your cartons, Partly filled or bulging cartons can tip or collapse. Packing and labeling cartons room by room makes unpacking, or finding items, much easier.
TELEVISIONS, VIDEO AND MUSIC EQUIPMENT
If you've kept the original boxes and packing materials, reuse them. Otherwise bubble wrap items individually and store them in sealed cartons, remembering to fill all gaps with packing to protect and prevent movement. Secure turntables and tone arms of record players to prevent damage, and pack records and CDs on their edge.
MOWERS AND OTHER MACHINERY
Drain fuel and oil to reduce the risk of damage to other goods and avoid a possible fire hazard. Please place old carpet or cardboard under them.
METAL ITEMS
Wrap silverware in non-acid tissue paper or store in plastic bags to reduce tarnishing. Wipe chrome and cast iron items with a cloth impregnated with a little machine oil to retard rust.
BATTERY-OPERATED TOYS AND APPLIANCES
We recommend removal of batteries to avoid damage from leaking acids.
COMPUTERS
Again, if you've kept the original boxes and packing materials, we recommend you reuse them. However, bubble wrap and good quality cartons will also do the job. Remember to use packing material to line the top and bottom, and pack the gaps to protect the equipment and prevent movement. Most computers have 'self-parking heads', but if you're unsure about moving and storing your electrical equipment, refer to the manufacturer's manual, or consult your retailer, especially if storing for more than six months. |
